Everyone running Pi for PIE!!

If you've done a typical, old-school 5K run of 3.1 miles, this will be SOOO MUCH BETTER, because of MATH. Start the spring season off right with a Pi K Fun Run!  March 14th, or 3.14, is celebrated internationally in honor of the math constant Pi.  In case you've forgotten your high school geometry lesson, this unique, indefinite number is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter.  Illinois Science Council teams up with Fleet Feet Sports to honor the importance of math and running in our lives with a Pi Day Pi K 3.14 mile fun run.

Start location:  Fleet Feet Sports - Old Town, 1620 N. Wells St., Chicago

Post Run Pi(e) Party: Immediately following the run at Fleet Feet Sports - OldTown, the party will include pizza pie, dessert pie, beer (ID required), non-alcoholic beverages, and games with prizes (prizes are for mental ability, not run times).  You will pick up your t-shirt at the post-party.

Capacity is neither uncertain nor irrational.  This first year event will be limited in size, so make sure you are one of the first 314 people to register!

March 14 also happens to be Albert Einstein’s birthday!  No kidding.  In his honor, IF your name is Albert, Alberta or Albertina, then you may enter the discount code "CallMeAl" and you'll receive $5 off your registration.  (Nooo, Allen, Allan, Alex or Allesandra does not count. Although the actual name Einstein would.) You will have to prove it with ID.  If you enter that code and are not appropriately named, you will forfeit your registration fee, be barred from running and people will call you "Einstein," and not in a positive way.

IMPORTANT INFO:
To participate in the run YOU MUST REGISTER in ADVANCE.  There will be no walk-ups (or run-ups) and NO day of registration. If you are not on our list by March 12 at midnight, you will not get in.  That's just how this pie rolls.

You do not have to run the course, walking is certainly allowed (and jogging, trotting or skipping), but no baby joggers, strollers, bikes, skates or pets.  Children are allowed but anyone under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.  Costumes are allowed and encouraged (if clever).  Gear check will be provided.  There is no packet or numbers to be pick up prior to the run.  T-shirts will be available for pick-up only after the run.  There are no refunds for this event.

A portion of the registration proceeds will benefit the programs of Illinois Science Council, and independent 501c3 nonprofit organization that promotes science, technology, engineering and math to the public.

GETTING THERE:
If you're taking public transportation, Fleet Feet Sports - Old Town is accessible by the #22 Clark, #36 Broadway, and #72 North Ave bus routes. Closest CTA el station is Brown Line stop at Sedgewick.
A parking garage is available at Pipers Alley at 230 W. North Av. (it isn't cheap), or try street meter parking.

Pi, in case you don't remember, is abbreviated to 3.14 but continues indefinitely. To date, it has been calculated by computer to over 1.2 trillion digits. Competitions exist for reciting the most digits by memory. As the world’s most famous mathematical constant, Pi is important to many formulas used in mathematics, science, engineering and statistics.

Weather:  This is Chicago.  Weather on March 14 could be warm and sunny, or cold, windy and wet.  Please dress accordingly.  The Pi K will take place rain, snow or shine.  If cancellation is warranted due to severe weather conditions, announcements will be made on the day of the run, not in advance.

WAIVER and RELEASE:
Waiver of Responsibility: I know that participating in a running/walking event is a potentially hazardous activity. I should not enter unless I am medically able and properly trained. I agree to abide by a decision of a race official relative to my ability to safely complete the run/walk. I assume all risks associated with running/walking in this event including but not limited to: falls, contact with other participants, the effects of the weather, including low temperature/high heat and/or humidity, traffic, and the conditions of the course, all risk being known and appreciated by me. Having read this waiver and knowing these facts and in consideration of my entry, I, for myself, and anyone entitled to act on my behalf, waive and release Illinois Science Council and its officers and employees, DL ZIMCO, Inc. d/b/a Fleet Feet Sports-Chicago and its officers and employees, and all other sponsors, individuals, and volunteers associated with the event, their representatives and successors and all claims of liabilities of any kind arising out of my participation in this event. I attest and verify that I am physically fit and have sufficiently trained for the event. No refunds will be provided if race is canceled due to unforeseen circumstances or acts of nature.
